Quick geography: what each side is

João Pessoa sits in the middle of Paraíba's coast. From the urban shoreline, the south coast goes down toward Conde and Praia Bela. The north coast goes up toward Cabedelo, where the Paraíba River meets the sea. Both sides are reachable by car within 40 minutes from the central shoreline. But what each side offers is very different — and that's what we'll detail.

South Coast: beaches, cliffs and adrenaline

The South Coast is João Pessoa's postcard. It starts in Jacarapé, passes through Gramame, Amor, Tambaba, Coqueirinho, Tabatinga, Carapibus and Praia Bela. Most beaches feature colorful cliffs (orange, yellow, pink), palm groves and open sea. Coqueirinho is the highlight, with Paraíba's most famous photo (cliff + palm + sea). There's also the ATV trail (Mirante Dedo de Deus, Castelinho da Princesa) for those wanting adrenaline. It's the ideal side for a full beach day, with departures around 8am-9am and return by 4:30pm.

North Coast: history, calm sea and the sunset

João Pessoa's North Coast has a different DNA. Cabedelo is the neighboring city and the hub: Sea Turtle Nesting Reserve (Tamar Project), Cabedelo Dike (where the Paraíba River meets the sea), Fort Santa Catarina (Portuguese colonial period) and the iconic Sunset at Jacaré, with live Ravel's Bolero. To the northwest, the Areia Vermelha sandbank appears at low tide off Camboinha Beach. It's a day of calmer sea, history and Brazil's most memorable sunset.

How to choose between them

If you like active beaches, cliffs, colorful photos and have energy for a full day on the shore — South Coast. If you prefer a contemplative pace, history, calm sea and a memorable sunset — North Coast. If you're with small kids or seniors — North Coast is lighter. If you're with a young couple or friend group hunting photos and adrenaline — South Coast (especially with ATV).

The ideal is to do both

In 2 or 3 days of itinerary, you can do both sides comfortably. Day 1: Classic South Coast or Jampa Combo with ATV. Day 2: North Coast + Areia Vermelha + Sunset at Jacaré. When it doesn't, we adjust without losing the best of each side.
