Is João Pessoa a good destination for children?
João Pessoa is one of the safest capitals in the Northeast and has a calm beach structure, without strong currents on most of the shoreline. The natural pools, when visited at the right low tide, have shallow and calm water — ideal for children. Traffic in the city is less chaotic than in Recife or Fortaleza. And the local people are genuinely welcoming with families and children. The city works well as a family destination as long as the itinerary is planned with the tide table in mind.
Natural pools with children: what to consider
Picãozinho is the most recommended natural pool for small children: close to shore, short boat crossing, and shallow enough water to stand in most of the area. Seixas also works for older children — the reefs are more extensive and the fauna is richer, but access is a bit farther. Life vests are available and recommended regardless of swimming ability. Water-resistant sunscreen, in good amount, is indispensable.
Areia Vermelha by catamaran with children
The catamaran is a stable boat, without big waves on the Jacaré River crossing. Areia Vermelha has very shallow water when the island is emerged — children love walking on the sand in the middle of the ocean. It's one of the most photogenic tours and usually delights children of all ages. [TO CONFIRM WITH MURILLO: minimum age or weight restriction for the Areia Vermelha catamaran]
City Tour: the urban itinerary that works for any age
The City Tour covers João Pessoa's historic center, Cabo Branco Lighthouse, Lagoa (Parque Solon de Lucena) and other points of the city. It's done in an air-conditioned van with stops for photos and walking. Doesn't depend on tide and can be done at any time. Children usually enjoy the Lighthouse and Lagoa — the park has open space to run and food kiosks.
Practical tips for traveling with children in João Pessoa
Sunscreen factor 50 or higher, water-resistant, applied in advance before getting on the boat. Sun-protective robe or shirt for children. Plenty of water — Northeast heat dehydrates quickly, especially in the pools where the heat sensation is lower. Light snack for long tours. Hat. Early start for pool tours — low tide is usually in the morning, which coincides with less strong sun and fewer tourists.
